Old brain…

We are always listening for something that is encouraging, teaching, sermons, stories that bring clarity to our daily activities and life as we endeavor to live for Jesus in this world.

This morning I heard a story that contradicts all the nay-sayers who repeatedly say I can’t memorize scripture so I don’t even try anymore. Yes there are scriptures which say, “Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.” (Ps.119:11), but memorizing the WORD and the ADDRESS is not a complete teaching. There were no ‘addresses’ as such when the scriptures were written.

The story goes like this. A man told his pastor. “I can’t memorize scripture, it just doesn’t stick in my head.” Even though the pastor encouraged him that it was important he gave up reading the Bible because the words just wouldn’t fall together right when he try to bring it to mind. Often the concept was there but he couldn’t get it word for word, so he gave up.

One day the pastor came to see him. He brought with him a basket. “Please take this to the sink and run water in it for 15 minutes.”

The man just looked at him incredulously, “That won’t work, it leaks just like my brain!”

“Humor me.”

The man took it to the sink and ran water through it for 15 minutes and gave it back to the pastor.
“Do it again.”

So the man did it again. “I told you it won’t hold water.”

“I know but do it one more time.” As the man highly respected his pastor, he did it again.

“Still not holding water.” As he handed it back to the pastor.

“It’s soaked through and very clean is it not?”

“Well, yes. I should hope so by now!”

“How long did it take for the water to soak in and how long did it take to make the basket really clean?”

Ephesians 5:25b just as Christ loved the church and gave Himself up for her 26 to sanctify her, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word,

John 15:3
You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you.

John 17:17
Sanctify them by the truth; Your word is truth.

1 Corinthians 6:11 And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.
