New Year wishes… “IT”

It is 5:15 a.m. on January 1, 2014.  Most of us have already wished our friends and family a Happy, Happy, Happy New Year, health, prosperity and an end to “Obamacare”.  (that last bit is dated and will only be relevant for a short future, we pray) We want and desire all good things for ourselves and those we love. We work hard, pushing the limits of our endurance and most days, our patience. As Christians our goals and desires need to be placed in eternal values. Yes we do want to be healthy and prosper. John the beloved disciple tells us in his 3rd letter…3 John 1:2 Beloved, I wish above all things that you may prosper and be in health, even as your soul prospers. He calls us the ‘beloved’, and puts the perspective in the right place, the eternal prosperity of our soul.

Our problem comes when we have ‘it’ all. We have all the worldly goods and prosperity, but ‘it’ turns our heads, our thinking, that we are doing well; and we begin, as did the children of Israel to worship the ‘it’.

Hosea 10:2 Their heart is divided; now will they be found faulty: He will break down their altars, He will spoil their images.

The children of Israel were getting ahead and having great success and prosperity (‘it’), but they forgot God. Their health was good and the CDC had found cures for all that ailed them and they felt so physically well, they also forgot their Maker.

Deuteronomy 8:6 Therefore you shall keep the commandments of the Lord your God, to walk in His ways, and to fear Him. 7 For the Lord your God brings you into a good land, a land of brooks of water, of fountains and depths that spring out of valleys and hills; 8 A land of wheat, and barley, and vines, and fig trees, and pomegranates; a land of oil olive, and honey; 9 A land where you shall eat bread without scarceness, you shall not lack any thing in it; a land whose stones are iron, and out of whose hills you may dig brass. 10 When you have eaten and are full, then you shall bless the Lord your God for the good land which He has given you. 11 Beware that you forget not the Lord your God, in not keeping His commandments, and His judgments, and His statutes, which I command you this day: 12 Lest when you have eaten and are full, and have built good houses, and dwell there; 13 And when your herds and flocks multiply, and your silver and gold is multiplied, and all that you have is multiplied; 14 Then your heart is lifted up, and you forget the Lord your God, which brought you forth out of….. Bondage!

Dear friends, do not ‘bind’ yourself to the ‘it’ of this world, either in possessions or health, intellect or fame. Nothing of this world will remain one day and we want to ‘listen and obey’ the voice of the Lord, so we may spend eternity in His ‘nearer presence’.  Blessing and peace to you this year, “as your soul prospers”.  Keep your focus in the Word of God which is written for our benefit. 2 Timothy 3:16 All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness…
